The Health Intelligence Lab (HINTLab), led by Dr. Jiancheng Yang at the ELLIS Institute Finland and Aalto University, brings together generative and agentic AI, multimodal learning, and world models to build virtual patients.

Positions are supported by a newly awarded Research Council of Finland Academy Project (~€600K) on clinical world models, and by my co-PI role in ELLIS Institute Finland's health moonshot (~€4.8M, Business Finland Rise to Challenge, a highly competitive call at ~3.2% success rate).

I review every email but may not reply immediately. Doctoral/postdoctoral applications are reviewed in batches, and only shortlisted candidates are notified. Intern applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; if you have not heard back within two weeks, please assume I cannot proceed at the moment.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for talented members to conduct curiosity-driven research:
- A strong passion for AI for healthcare, particularly for bringing together generative and agentic AI, multimodal learning, and world models to build virtual patients. If our vision excites you, that is the most important sign of a good match.
- Background in EECS, BME, or a related STEM field.
- Hands-on AI experience is required. Prior experience in healthcare or biomedicine is not necessary, but a strong interest and motivation to work on interdisciplinary research in medical AI is essential.
- Strong coding and problem-solving skills. Experience with multi-GPU/multi-node training, biomedical AI, notable open source, or clinical collaboration is a plus.

Mentoring

many of whom have published in top-tier venues and continued to PhD programs
at Harvard, MIT, ETH Zurich, and EPFL.
Compute
We provide cutting-edge compute through the ELLIS Institute (exclusive access to 100+
H200 GPUs), Aalto University, and even larger resources from Finland's
EuroHPC/LUMI supercomputer.
Members will have the opportunity to run multi-node training with hundreds of GPUs,
resources on a scale rarely available in academia.
Beyond compute, we actively support AI tokens through subscriptions and API credits.
Data and Clinical Resources
We have accumulated large-scale proprietary datasets,
in some areas exceeding national-level databases.
In Finland, we also have access to nationwide health data resources covering more than 7.1 million
people.
In addition, we maintain strong clinical collaborations
that allow us to expand resources and conduct clinical validation,
supporting our flagship projects.
Collaboration and Networking
I have worked and collaborated across Europe, Asia, and the US, and
I actively connect students to my network, including top institutes and
the broader ELLIS community.
We also provide support for attending international conferences and exchange opportunities.

We welcome prospective PhD students starting in spring or autumn 2027 through the ELLIS PhD Program central call: apply by 31 October 2026 and indicate Jiancheng Yang as a preferred advisor. The start date is agreed individually.
- Typically 4 years, fully funded, with a starting salary of approx. €3,000+/month (gross), Aalto benefits, and Finnish social security. In addition to our general requirements: a master's degree by the start date and English proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Research Interns / Visiting Students / Thesis Students / Collaborators Click to expandClick to collapse
- Rolling applications. In-person and remote interns receive similar supervision and build research experience while working towards project outcomes and publications. You can join an existing project or lead one based on your own idea, with our guidance and resources.
- Remote: normally requires a commitment of at least six months.
- At Aalto: in addition to research, you may earn credits through a Special Assignment (ELEC-E8127) or a thesis project.
- These research and study opportunities normally have no stipend. Paid positions, such as AScI summer internships, will be advertised separately.
- We currently cannot host CSC-funded visiting students at Aalto.
